assault on hoth

Assault On Hoth - Star Wars sets are notoriously mixed in their quality, with some disappointing offerings alongside plenty of excellent sets. However, no set that I can remember has received as negative a response as 75098 Assault on Hoth, and it's easy to see why. Not only do the sets include very few new models, but the miniature selection is very small and the play value is significantly reduced by the small imperial power.

However, it would be unfair to dismiss this set as a complete failure, as there have been positive reviews, although not as many as expected for a set of this size and price.

I rarely comment on packaging, but the Ultimate Collector's Series labeling on the box warrants some discussion. I'm not particularly protective of the "UCS" label, but there's no doubt that this set doesn't deserve such a description, instead serving to make the entire range look like its weakest member. Also, the box artwork doesn't do this set, as the front and back of it look too ugly to me, although the simulated glow of the Star Wars logo is a nice touch.

Review: 75098 Assault On Hoth

The instruction manual is a thick tome of nearly three hundred pages, occupied by some information about the first eleven Hoth battles and interviews with the designers. Reading these pages made me even more upset after seeing the following comments:

It speaks volumes about the quality of this set that designer Hans Burkard Schlommer compared the design process for 75098 to making many smaller sets. I was disappointed to read a contradiction between attention to detail and attention to accuracy, which by LEGO's admission is inseparable from Hans's comments regarding the UCS premises and the watch tower. Some artistic license is welcome, but not at the expense of a model's appearance, and this is especially true on a UCS set in my view.

Most unfortunate is the statement that you can complete the Battle of Hoth by adding 75054 AT-AT. Unfortunately, that set was recalled in November of last year, so LEGO's failure to reprint the instructions with the correct information is surprising because it can be very frustrating, especially since this set is clearly designed with kids in mind. I understand that the set was intended for release last year, when the 75054 would be available, but that is no excuse for this error which is likely due to carelessness or an attempt to avoid the additional expense of reprinting the instructions. None of the cases are acceptable and I hope this will be corrected in future builds

Includes eighteen bags, one through thirteen, 6x24 plates and two stone elements that come loose in the box. I'm not going to comment on the construction in detail, as there are very few notable techniques used and it definitely feels like a lot of small sets put together like 60097 City Square.

Thorin Farr is one of only five new characters and arguably the most significant of them all, a testament to the humiliation of the others. Her torso and legs are new and both elements are well detailed, although the chest print doesn't try to match the parka she's seen in the movie. Instead the designs for two of the included Rebel Troopers were created and only reused here, which is very disappointing.

Her head is printed with a smiling, steady expression that looks good, but the hair is completely wrong This is even more disappointing because an ideal hair piece already exists and was used for the 8831-4 bride. It also includes a hole on the top for attaching a pair of headphones, like the ones worn by Torin in the movie This type of cutting angle is common to the entire field

My favorite of the fifteen minifigures is Major Brain Darlin, described on the packaging as a generic rebel officer. His head, complete with a huge mustache, was first seen in the 75131 Resistance Trooper Bat Pack, but his torso is new and also features some pockets with a rank indicator.

The rebel trooper's helmet is better than white and bears seven figures included Goggles can be placed over the rim or stuck to the face which looks a bit silly due to their size, but is a welcome option. Darlin is armed with a blaster pistol

Five rebel troopers are included, three of whom wear the elaborate uniforms previously seen in the 75146 Star Wars Advent Calendar. The printed designs on their torsos and legs are pretty cool, but it's disappointing to see the same heads used for troops like 75138 Hot Attack, which could be considered an expansion pack for this set.

Three of those troops are armed with rifles, while the other two come with blaster pistols. They wear the same uniform as Thorin Farr, with an interesting print on both sides of the bottom and on the leg, suggesting that they are of a higher rank than the white uniformed soldiers. One has a rare head that is imprinted with a beard, but the other uses the same head as other rebel troops. A total of ten different heads are used among the thirteen human minifigures which is not good enough

Luke Skywalker wears the same uniform with a darker color scheme, though it has a belt and additional rank indicia. His head is topped with a smile on one side and a wampa on the other, a new design that is nice despite not being necessary in my opinion.

Luke is armed with a blue lightsaber and wears a white helmet similar to Rebel Troopers, although the shape of the helmet leaves part of his face behind.

In addition to Luke being included, Han Solo is also right A similar figure, with a hood rather than hair, appears in 75138 Hoth Attack which greatly reduces its appeal. However, the torso and leg prints are impressive, while his head is imprinted with smiles and eyes on both sides. It is also worth noting that the print on the back of the torso is unique as it shows the jacket with a folded hood.

Han is armed with a blaster pistol, but without his hood which is a bit annoying since he spends a lot of time carrying it, especially when saving Luke.

Wes Antilles and Wes Johnson flew under the call of Rogue Three during the Battle of Hoth, successfully crashing an AT-AT and escaping the camp. This is the first time Johnson has been seen on set, and his helmet features a new print as expected, but the figure is otherwise unremarkable, with the same head with wedges and the usual habit of pilot Rebel that some people are used to. Wedge's only previous appearance came in 6212 X-Wing Fighter but his helmet print has been updated to be more faithful to the film. It is disappointing that the same head, albeit bilateral, was used for both pilots, as the characters are important enough to warrant a new design. This is another example of cutting a corner, which I wouldn't expect from a set that costs so much

K-3PO only appears very briefly during the battle of Hoth, but I'm happy to have an extra droid to fill the base and the figure looks great, with plenty of detail printed on the torso and legs. K-3PO last appeared on the 7666 Hoth Rebel base, but this figure is much improved, with yellow highlights on each eye and intricate designs on the front and back of the bottom.

I like the red spot on his chest as it provides a welcome splash of color that breaks up the predominantly white color scheme as effectively as the yellow eyes.

The R3-A2 is equally impressive in no small part of the trans-black dome, which contrasts sharply with the white and orange of its cylindrical body. I have to say that orange is not an ideal color for a droid because the painting in the film is really close to a yellow orange, but I'm happy with this pair of droids.

Two snowflakes are included to represent the empire, a tragic number given the title of the set. However, the minifigures are very accurate to their on-screen counterparts and I like the relatively new design. Each troop is equipped with a standard blaster with a cloth dagger and a rack. They share the same Clone Trooper face under their helmets which is nice.
