He said the video exposed New Zealanders to the "extreme violence and intolerance" police officers face every day.

Cahill said that "this violence is very difficult to watch and unfortunately attacks of this violence are not rare, with over two thousand attacks on police last year alone," Cahill said.
"Abuse is not 'just part of the job' of protecting the country, the court needs to send a clear message about that. If the police are not careful, how can they protect New Zealanders?"
The witness who filmed the video told the Herald he was waiting at a traffic light when he saw the man "in a state of disarray" being chased by police.
When the police surrounded the man on foot, he approached a police officer and punched him in the face.

Two women - one domestic violence - who trusted the police officer accused him of sexually assaulting them.
Kevin Stephen Burke, currently a Northland detective, faces two counts of indecent assault and two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

His trial in the High Court in Auckland began this morning on the charges against two female complainants.
The alleged offenses took place in 2002 and 2003 when Burke was a detective in the Auckland region and the two women met him during various criminal investigations he was involved with.
In his opening statement to the jury, Crown attorney Jo Murdoch said the complaints of the two women - who are not related - came from "different worlds and lived very different lives".
"The Crown says the complainants have one thing in common - the accused attacked them when they trusted and relied on him."

The first complainant was similar in age to Burke, who was 40 years old, while the second complainant was in his 20s, at the time of the alleged incident.
An elderly woman met with Burke in 2002 to discuss her dealings with a fraudster who was being investigated by detectives.
A few weeks after Burke met her in a professional capacity, the Crown said a police officer turned up uninvited at the woman's Auckland home one evening.
He carried a case of beer and a bottle of wine, Murdoch said, and the pair talked for hours on the deck of the woman's home.

The woman did not drink alcohol but thought Burke had been drinking, Murdoch said.
So he gave her a bed in the spare room, where the Crown alleges Burke began kissing her.
Murdoch told jurors that Burke allegedly overpowered the woman, put his hands over her head before going into digital mode.
He was able to break free from arrest and spend the night in his own room, Murdoch said, while Burke spent the night in the dormitory.

The alleged abuse was also recorded in the woman's diary, Murdoch said, although she did not complain at the time.
"She didn't want to be a victim and live her life," Murdoch said, adding that the woman never saw Burke again about the fraudster she was investigating.
Fairley said his client was invited to the woman's home, the relationship was consensual, and the pair met for coffee and dinner — even after the alleged assault.
He said Burke did not have sex "at any time, shape or form" with the other complainant.

Burke is the policeman in charge of investigating the same attack in which his partner stabbed the woman.
An entry in Burke's notebook calculated their age difference — 19 years — at one of their first meetings, Murdoch said.
"An indication of his state of mind when he first met the complainant," the Crown attorney suggested to the jury.
The other complainant was in a "bad place" in his life, Murdoch said, and saw Burke as a loving and professional police officer.

But Murdoch said others, who will be called as witnesses in the trial, believed Burke's support for the woman "had a poor professional approach".
One Friday night, the jury was told, the detective came to her house with a bottle of wine and a pizza.
The couple joined the woman's elder, but the complainant went to bed drunk.
The Crown says Burke entered her room, undressed, followed her into bed and rubbed her legs up and down her back before she fell asleep.

A few weeks later, the Crown alleges Burke returned to the home and pinned her to a wall to mutilate her head and breasts, as well as break her legs.
On the third occasion, the Crown said he exposed himself to the woman, then sexually assaulted her.
He later moved to Australia and eventually filed a complaint against Burke's alleged sexual conduct in 2017.
When interviewed by police, regarding each complainant twice, Burke denied any sexual misconduct with the other complainant.

Christopher Pullease, 47, is charged with aggravated assault and battery during November. 19, the Broward State Attorney's office said in a statement.
Pullease, who was removed from his supervisory duties in January, allegedly "intentionally touched or killed" the female officer against her will and assaulted her when he held pepper spray to her face, the affidavit said.

Charged with assault on a civilian, who was being held in what authorities described as a crime of violence at the time of the incident, Pullease held the water in the man's face, prosecutors said.
The statement may be why the South Florida Sun-Sentinel obtained Pullease's allegations that he tried to tamper with his cell phone for use in a criminal case.
In the video, which the police department closed and edited to protect an internal investigation, Pullease can be seen talking to the suspect, who was handcuffed in the back of a patrol car.
The officer can be seen approaching him and grabbing his work belt in an apparent attempt to pull him away, Sunrise Police Chief Anthony Rosa said.

In a January statement, Rosa said the sergeant, whom he did not name, arrived at the scene and approached the suspect, who Rosa described as "verbal and physical."
Pullease "approached and interacted with the suspect in a manner that I found inappropriate and unprofessional," Rosa said. It is our practice at the Sunrise Police Department to do everything we can to de-escalate and calm incidents.
Rosa also praised the female officer, noting that she acted in accordance with department policy that requires intervention when there is an "imminent threat of an unnecessarily escalating engagement."
